Album Notes For Endorphin
Posted by Hudson Eakin on Friday, February 20, 2009
Every week I release a song I'll be releasing some album notes on it. Keep in mind that this is only what the song means to me and I don't want to have any influence on what the music means to you. If Endorphin reminds you of washing the dishes, so be it. If it reminds you of doing that crazy party you went to or makes you feel like a sumo wrestler is sitting on your chest, awesome. Keep that. The only reason why I write these is for the sake of curiosity and so that a couple years from now I can look back on this and go "Oh yeah! I remember now...".
Music is personal, and it's not my place to tell you how to interpret my work.
Enjoy!
-----------
The music to Endorphin came before the lyrics during the first couple weeks of school in September of 2008 and for the most part the song sticks pretty close to the basement demo I did of it. The lyrics wouldn't come until much later while at a student film festival that took place here on campus. Little did I know I would see one of the most beautiful pieces of art ever created for a movie screen. The film was titled "Endorphin" and before the director, Michael Sirois, showed us his work he explained the the film was about the college experience. Specifically, that the film was about the pressure to perform well and not knowing for sure whether or not this is something that you want. At the time that I heard Michael say this it was only a month or so after I'd left Faster! Faster! and I most certainly felt that way about music. The only difference was that the only person really pressuring me to do well was myself, but then again I had zero desire to repeat past mistakes. This song is about wishing someone would just tell you what to do so that you didn't have to make decisions for yourself.
Lyrics:
This drug, it's called Slumber,
it helps me to forget, and when I wake up in December,
There won't be nothing left,
I'm a shell of my former self,
I'm the lost and found box that never gets opened
Ask me, just how I'm doing,
I'll always say I'm doing fine,
these problems are my own and,
I'm keeping quiet as I lose my mind,
Chorus:
Just tell me what's going on here,
Just tell me where to go,
This is my life, ain't it?
I've got a right to know!
Pressure's on, I've lost all feeling
inside my fingertips,
The memories of yesterday,
endorphins dance across my lips
He's not coming home, he's far too changed
Adopted all of them, strange ways
Ask me, just how I'm doing
The honest truth is that I'm scared,
If I fall off the world this time,
will I get back up? Or will I stay there.
Chorus
