Album Notes: My Best Shot
Posted by Hudson Eakin on Friday, March 20, 2009
Every week I release a song I'll be releasing some album notes on it.
Keep in mind that this is only what the song means to me and I don't
want to have any influence on what the music means to you. If Endorphin
reminds you of washing the dishes, so be it. If it reminds you of doing
that crazy party you went to or makes you feel like a sumo wrestler is
sitting on your chest, awesome. Keep that. The only reason why I write
these is for the sake of curiosity and so that a couple years from now
I can look back on this and go "Oh yeah! I remember now...".
Music is personal, and it's not my place to tell you how to interpret my work.
Enjoy!
-----------
Musically, My Best Shot was inspired by the song Weird Fishes/Arpeggi by Radiohead. I really like the idea of coffee-house chill kind of verse, but I really wanted something bigger during the chorus...like a fight broke out between the barista and you because they got your order wrong. Originally the rhythm guitar part you hear in the verse was written for bass only, (Try it, it sounds really cool!) but it didn't quite give the jazzy vibe I was looking for. The electric/acoustic guitar accomplishes this a lot better I think.
Lyrically, this song was originally meant to be two songs because I wrote them at completely different times. The set of lyrics you hear in the first verse were written while I was still in shock over leaving Faster! Faster!, breaking up my ex-girlfriend, going through a rough patch with my family, etc. Basically, just a really shitty month.
The second set of lyrics that you hear in the second verse came during that magical night where my brain just kinda exploded all over the walls, and I wrote down whatever I could effectively scrape up and put together.
To me, this song is the answer to a letter I wrote to myself during that really shitty month and finally accepting that yes, things were going to be very different, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

Lyrics:
Hey man, how've you been? it has been so, long since last I've seen you
Are you still music sex and coffee? are you still going faster?
Tell me, how is leena? Do you think that she's the one?
Yall looked oh so cute together, so cute, together forever.
I hear, you're a business major, have you given up on bass?
I heard, you're not coming home, have you given up on this place?
Don't you, forget where you come from, cuz we made you who you are
If it, wasn't for us, come back cuz you'll never be a star
Tell me, why did you go and, throw it, all away what were you, thinking?
You could've had the world and, you let it slip away.
How can, you go to sleep at night, knowing you've lost it everything
I hate to think that, you've got no regrets
Chorus:
And when scars heal, the skin's tougher beneath
When you've got, nothing left, nothing matters to me
Mon ami,
A lot of things have changed, and it's a little different
and I, feel that I'm much better now that things have ended
No I'm, done going faster, but I'm going stronger! Would I, ever go back?
No sir, I'm sick of all that, and Leena? Yeah it's over, even though we thought it would last forever. Shows what, can happen one summer, growing up can be a bitch. I've been, tossed and turned about, backstabbed and betrayed by, my friends I've lost, so so much but I've gotten through it. Yes I, I'll be coming back, but it's not my home now. And when I, finally get there I'll be bigger, stronger than before I've dealt with so much worse than this, dirt off my shoulder, sure it hurt for awhile, but these scars won't phase me!
Chorus
Outro:
I've been knocked down, dragged out, humiliated, and all around,
Shut down, denounced, but now I'm back to show you what it's all about
You can't back me in a corner and expect me to bow down,
Little guys will fight until their burger, crawl my way to the top and I'll scream out loud.
I'm the best I ever was, and I'm so glad you let me down
because I've never felt so fine I've still got it, I've got that fire!
You proved me wrong, you sold me short,
honor from thieves, you broke my heart,
I trusted you, this is what I get, I'll never, ever speak to you again,
Take your house of cards and run,
your ceiling of glass enjoy your fun,
ten years from now, I won't forget,
any of the secrets that you'll pretend
that I don't know, just what it means,
to be true to myself, and be the real me
cover up the ugly truth, I'm sick of the brand name and I'm sick of you
Fuck the fame, and fuck the funds,
I'll scream until my voice is numb,
I do not want such empty words,
I just want simply to be heard,
I'll share my sweat with everyone,
I'll work until the job is done,
I'll never tire, I'll never stop,
Until I've given my best shot.
Music is personal, and it's not my place to tell you how to interpret my work.
Enjoy!
